The History of Ladner Christian Reformed Church

OUR LOGO

The community of Ladner in which our church is located is part of a larger area known as Delta, BC. Delta was named for the flat delta land at the mouth of the Fraser River.

Symbolically, our church logo represents "the river of the water of life" over which the sun rises and sets in its daily routine. Jesus invites all who are thirsty to come to him and drink.

John 4:14 says, "whoever drinks the water I give will never thirst."

Revelation 22:1 speaks of "the river of the water of life." This is a word picture of hope and restoration. Ladner Christian Reformed Church seeks to be a community of hope and restoration.

  OUR HISTORY

The Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA) has been in existence since 1867.  The year 2007 marked the 150th anniversary as a denomination and included a variety of North America wide celebrations.

The year 2005 marked the 100th anniversary of the CRC in Canada.  The first congregation was established in the Nobelford/Granum area of Southern Alberta.  Much of the initial expansion of the CRC came as the result of post second world war immigration from Europe and particularly the Netherlands.

Ladner CRC was established in 1950 out of a desire of a small group of Reformed believers who wished to worship the Lord and practice their faith according to “reformed” principles.  (see “Our Beliefs” for more details).

In summary, we believe that Jesus Christ is Lord over every square inch of life and living.  This has implications on a variety of levels including, for example, education, work, marriage and family life, etc.  Because of this “all of life perspective” the early members of   Ladner CRC were instrumental in the formation of what is now known as Delta Christian School. (www.deltachristianschool.org)

In addition, the church community was and continues to be supportive of such institutions as The King’s University College (Edmonton, AB – www.kingsu.net);  Redeemer University College (Ancaster, ON - www.redeemer.on.ca)  and the Institute for Christian Studies (Toronto,ON – www.icscanada.edu).   These institutions along with the Christian Labor Association of  Canada (CLAC – www.clac.ca) and Citizens for Public Justice (CPJ – www.cpj.ca),  became a reality through the, by and large, grassroots efforts of members of the Canadian Christian Reformed churches.  World Relief    is another significant aspect of CRC ministry and is facilitated through the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC – www.crwrc.org) which works in close cooperation with other world relief agencies.

The genius of the Reformed Christian faith is that it is intended to be “re-forming” or “reshaping” ministry and life without compromising the central message and teachings of the Bible.  We, therefore, seek to be a congregation that is culturally relevant, desiring to meet real needs in our community.
